Used to harden plastics and found in CD cases, plastic knives and forks, baby bottles and drinks and food cans, BPA Polycarbonate is one of the world’s most widely manufactured chemicals. However, Bisphenol A mimics the female sex hormone oestrogen and can interfere with the way hormones are processed around the body and a study has shown that men who have high levels of this chemical in their bodies are more likely to have low sperm counts.
Researchers estimate that BPA can be found in more than 90 per cent of the population and, whilst some studies with animals have shown it is safe, still more have found links with liver damage, obesity, breast cancer , diabetes and fertility problems.
