The Local reports that a leading health insurer has gone public with the news that the number of German men being treated for erectile dysfunction rose by 13% between 2006 and 2009 with nearly 19,000 of their male members seeking treatment this year.
For nearly nine out of 10 men, psychological factors were the key cause of problems with impotence but excessive alcohol consumption and smoking were also linked. Treatments for erectile dysfunction include vacuum pumps and psychotherapy as well as pharmaceuticals.
Curiously, female sexual dysfunction in the form of lack of sexual desire, nervousness or pain during intercourse declined by 15% over the same period. Of the 29,000 men and women who were treated for these problems last year, only one in four were women and no one knows how many men continue to suffer with erectile dysfunction because they avoid the doctor out of embarrassment.
