Channel 4′s Embarrassing Bodies is a rich source of information for the male medical conditions that form the basis of this site and this week they returned to the subject of Peyronie’s Disease where the penis curves round into a C Shape.
The gentleman in question also presented with a slight curvature in his fingers which had started at around the same time as the bending of his penis. Dr Christian diagnosed Dupuytrens Contracture where the fascias in the palm start to thicken and contract up to form a claw and often goes hand in hand with Peyronie’s Disease.
Peyronie’s affects as many as three in one hundred men and begins with a small lump in the shaft of the penis, sometimes caused by hitting or bending it. This develops into a long, hardened scar which causes the penis to curve. One in five sufferers also has Dupuytren’s Contracture.
Victor saw a consultant urological surgeon and had to make the decision whether to have surgery to remove the lump of plaque which was ruining his erection with the knowledge that such surgery could cause a shortening of his penis – up to an inch or more.
After inducing an erection, it was decided that the angle of Victor’s curve at round 50 degrees made him an ideal candidate for a Nesbit’s procedure where tissue is taken from the other side of the penis from the scar in order to straighten the curve. The more tissue that needs to be removed, the more length is lost.
The penis is degloved and the skin is pulled back so that the small sections of tissue can be removed from the outside curve of the penis. Victor had two cuts each of 7mm losing 1.5cm from his total length. All such operations also carry an impotence risk of one in four later on but the surgeon in this case did his best to ensure that Victor had the best chance of avoiding this.
Certainly, some weeks later, Victor was very pleased with the successful outcome of his operation.
