Penile dysfunction, otherwise known as erectile dysfunction (or erctile dysfunction, erectial dysfunction, errectile dysfunction, if you check the Google searches), is the inability to achieve or sustain an erection and is, therefore, another name for impotence.
Many men suffer temporarily with this problem and it can be linked to stress or other psychological factors.
However, there are also various physical causes that make the affliction a more permanent occurrence. Many of these are linked to being overweight, including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure (hypertension) and, if you are suffering with penile dysfunction, you should visit your doctor so that these can all be ruled out.
Certain neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and the effect of a stroke can also affect performance.
Smoking and alcohol dependence both contribute to the problem, but are areas over which a man does have some control and cutting back on both of these social pleasures is a good place to start if you are experiencing problems.
One of the more unusual syndromes behind penile dysfunction is Peyronie’s Disease, where a previous trauma to the penis can cause it to bend round in a circle, making an erection almost impossible.
Such abnormalities aside, one of the most common causes of penile dysfunction is a lax pelvic floor. By regularly doing kegel and pelvic floor exercises to work your pubococcygeus and bulbocavernosus/bulbospongiosus muscles, you can improve your ability to achieve an erection and maintain its endurance… as well as having the additional benefits of better control during penetration.
